Description

Surprised by Miracles shares deep biblical truths about miracles and their role in Christian experience and mission work. Miracles are not only exciting, but essential, as the apostle Paul attests:
…by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit.…I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ (Romans 15:19).
Jesus was never shy in pointing to the evidence of His miracles, even though miracles made His opponents jealous and fearful of Him, ending in their conspiracy to nail Him to a cross.
Walking on water, healing the sick, changing water into wine, and much more are all possible now. As real-life stories in this book testify, such miracles are often surprising and sometimes confusing. Yet, God mandates miracles to reach people who do not know Him.
Surprised by Miracles is for everyone who:
Desires a greater experience of God.
Hungers to succeed in mission work.
Wonders about the nature, variety, and meaning of miracles.
Wants to learn how to do miracles.
Seeks to understand the role and meaning of suffering
The included interactive Study Guide is a great resource for personal or small group learning.

Foreword

It has been my privilege to become closely acquainted with Pastor Edgar Mayer, his wife Tatjana, and their two daughters, Francisca and Dominique. They are a godly family whose lives reflect their deep love and commitment to Jesus Christ. Pastor Edgar has a very impressive family!
As one who has spent his life in pursuit of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and His character and work, it is extremely gratifying to meet one who is highly qualified academically, yet has maintained a profound childlike faith that God still works miracles today.
Surprised by Miracles is the journey of a man who discovers that God is the same today as when He walked the earth in Jesus—“the Father who dwells in me does the works” (John 14:10 NKJV).
Pastor Edgar brilliantly describes the inner conflict, the insecurities, and some fear in stepping out and believing that God will do the impossible. It is the faith risk that we all must take as we “get out of the boat” and walk on the water of faith trusting that God will do what we cannot. This journey is at times a bit scary, but oh the joy when God honors His Word and uses us to take away someone’s pain—or when He heals an incurable condition and we experience the wonderful atmosphere as His Spirit uses us to help another person.
The case for signs and wonders is superbly presented. It is impossible to honestly read the Bible and then ignore the miraculous content so liberally filling its pages. Pastor Edgar and his people have decided to pursue the God of the Bible who does these amazing things!
This book, Surprised by Miracles, is not only about miracles. It is also about a deeper life in God and should be read by all. Pastor Edgar does not shy away from the difficult questions about suffering, but explores the subject through the suffering of Christ. I have found his treatment of this often bypassed topic simply and sincerely expressed, yet totally profound.
As you read this magnificent book, you cannot avoid the scriptural necessity of being filled with the Spirit, being led by the Spirit and—certainly not least—living in the power of the Spirit. The scriptural references and exposition are compelling. The case for experiencing God is clearly presented and will be of immense value to those who hesitate to experience God in His love and power.
The discussion on the subject of miracles is profound and should be compulsory reading for every Bible school and theological student. The biblical content is excellent and will help all to see the connection between Bible days and today. You will be left in no doubt that God is a God of miracles and miracles are for today!
Pastor Edgar has an excellent knowledge of the Scriptures and uses them to clearly present the truth that miracles are God’s will for now. They formed a large part of Jesus’ ministry and caused much controversy, but were undeniable. They drew large crowds to whom Jesus preached and taught truths of the kingdom of God.
From the first page to the last, this book is compelling reading. I highly commend it to you and leave you with the words from Jude 3: “Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.”
To contend for the faith expressed in this book is a truth we should all take to heart. I commend this book to you. From the first to the last page, it is filled with godly wisdom, does not shy away from the difficult questions and has very valuable insights into faith that works.
I wish you God’s blessing as you, the reader, pursue the God of miracles.
